PLACE ROYALE AND PETIT-CHAMPLAIN
Wandering the picturesque pedestrian streets of the Petit-Champlain district and stopping to explore Place Royale is like stepping back in time to the earliest days of Québec City. Locate the area on a map Legendary Place Royale is steeped in history. It was here that Samuel de Champlain chose to erect his Abitation, which served as a fort, storehouse, trading post, and residence when he arrived in 1608. It was the first permanent French settlement in North America. DON'T MISSCelebrating history The French influence is evident everywhere you look in Place Royale and along Rue du Petit-Champlain, one of the oldest commercial streets in North America.
PLAINS OF ABRAHAM
The Plains of Abraham are to Québec City as Central Park is to New York—an oasis of greenery in the heart of the city. The scene of many historic milestones over the centuries, the Plains today are the main stage venue for headline cultural events. Canada’s first national historic park, Battlefields Park, which includes the Plains of Abraham, was created in 1908 to mark the 300th anniversary of the founding of Québec. The 98 hectare park is a vast playground that draws sports enthusiasts, those out for a breath of fresh air, and families in search of an idyllic picnic spot.
Perched atop the headland, Château Frontenac has stood overlooking the St. Lawrence River and Dufferin Terrace for over 100 years. Construction on the most-photographed hotel in the world began in 1892. Since then, it has been expanded several times, including in 1924, when a central turret was added, and again in 1926 after fire destroyed part of the building. Stretching from the foot of the Citadelle to Château Frontenac, Dufferin Terrace offers breathtaking views of Île d’Orléans, the St. Lawrence River, the City of Lévis, and Québec City’s Lower Town, making it a perfect spot for taking photos. The 671-metre-long wooden boardwalk is a popular year-round gathering place.
